Before signing on to live in a house or hall, be sure you understand what kind of deposit is requested. First, there are security deposits that protect the landlord from damage, removal of furniture, or rent arrears. Second, a holding deposit means that you put money up front to show that you intend to be a tenant, but keep in mind it may not be refundable if you decide not to rent. You also have a choice in how you pay. Keep in mind that if you decide to pay your rent annually, rather than monthly, we offer a five percent discount.
